Business Health Check

See what is strong, exposed and not yet ready.

Your business has changed. Your next decision needs a clear view of where it stands now. A Business Health Check reviews the financial and funding position behind your plans, then identifies what deserves attention first.

When to take stock

Bring the uncertainty into focus.

Black Mountain Financial works with business owners in Canberra, the ACT and regional NSW. We begin with your objectives and agree a defined review around the questions you need answered.

Growth may be absorbing cash faster than expected. Profit may look sound while the bank balance tells a different story. An acquisition, equipment purchase or refinance may be approaching without a clear picture of what the business can support.

A review does not mean you need to switch lenders or borrow. Leaving a suitable structure in place is a legitimate outcome.

The review scope

Look at the parts that affect your next decision.

The scope selects from the following areas, according to your objectives and the information available. Each review specifies what is included.

01

Objectives and next stage

What you are trying to achieve, the timing and the commitments already made. These set the context for interpreting the financial position.

02

Profitability and cash flow

How earnings translate into cash, what has changed and which assumptions underpin your expectations. Where agreed, selected scenarios can examine the effect of changes in trading.

03

Working capital

The cash required between paying suppliers and receiving customer payments. Debtors, creditors, stock and seasonal movements can explain pressure that a profit figure alone does not show.

04

Debt and security

Current facilities, repayments, expiry dates, lending conditions and security commitments. The question is how the existing structure fits the business and its plans.

05

Performance context

Selected measures compared with suitable available benchmarks, where definitions and business characteristics align. A comparison is included only when it adds useful context.

06

Readiness and information gaps

The records, explanations and unresolved matters needed for a clearer assessment. Where tax, lodgement or legal issues arise, we identify the need for your relevant adviser to address them.

Preparing for the review

Start with your plans and the records you have.

The document request depends on the scope. It may include recent financial statements and management accounts, debtor and creditor reports, stock information, current facility details and forecasts.

Tell us what is available and what is incomplete. We agree what can reasonably be assessed and where further information is needed. Findings distinguish between documents reviewed, information supplied by you and assumptions requiring confirmation.

What you receive

A written view and a practical order of action.

Your written review sets out strengths, exposures, information gaps and recommended next steps within the agreed scope. It explains why each finding matters to your plans.

Findings may include any of these three conclusions:

  • The position supports the current plans.

The reviewed areas show no immediate need for change, within the stated limits.

  • Some matters are worth tidying.

Preparation or clarification would help before the next decision.

  • An issue needs attention.

A specific exposure warrants action, with its consequence and timing explained.

Where the evidence is insufficient, we explain what further information is needed before reaching a conclusion.

Common questions

Business Health Check, explained.

What is a Business Health Check?

It is a defined review of selected aspects of your business's financial and funding position. It identifies strengths, exposures and preparation priorities in the context of your objectives. The scope is agreed before work begins.

Is it an online score or automatic recommendation?

No. The review interprets the information within an agreed scope. It does not assign an automatic score or produce a credit-product recommendation from a questionnaire.

Is this an audit or business valuation?

No. It does not provide audit assurance or a business valuation. Accounting, tax, legal and investment advice are outside the offer. Personal home-loan advice follows a separate process.

Will it tell me whether the business can borrow?

It can identify financial questions and preparation needs relevant to funding. It is not a lender assessment, approval prediction or offer of finance. Any funding application requires its own assessment.

What happens if nothing needs changing?

The findings will say so within the scope and evidence reviewed. They may also identify matters to revisit when your plans or circumstances change. There is no requirement to refinance or proceed with further work.

What does it cost and how long does it take?

Fees and timing are agreed after the scope and information requirements are understood. The depth of the review and completeness of the records affect the work required.
